You haven’t known fear until you hear
That idiosyncratic clanging,
The approach of the bells towards the hall
All of your peers rush forward…
Am I alone in this instinctual rush of adrenaline?
Apparently yes
I take to my heels and flee to the room next door,
Where the adults are scooping up
Paper plates and plastic cups
And various pass the parcel debris.
I would rather stay here, and tidy
Than take my chances out there
With him
And his nightmarish beardy grin.
They swore he wasn’t real.
They never warned me he could appear.
